Online Lessons

Covid-19, the topic for everybody at the moment. It is a hard time for everybody and every profession. Also the music culture and specially music education is suffering as one to one lessons are not allowed, concerts and music festivals are cancelled.
Being into quarantine for two weeks and having a lot more time at home, I’ve had the chance to experiment with online teaching for the first time. I’d like to offer my services for all musicians wanting to use their free time to get better or discover new tricks. If you’re interested, send me an email on glenn@glennvanlooy.be or via my social media networks to find out about the fee, more information or any questions you may have.
I’ll be available on ZOOM or Skype or even FaceTime.
All you need is an instrument, laptop or phone and your motivation.

Stay safe and stay home everybody.

Summer travels 2018

After a complete time of silence of this website we are now going to try to keep it up to date!
As Glenn’s latest post says it’s now time to talk about an even busier summer.

This year Glenn saw his summer travels extended over June-July and August.
The early summer season started in the Netherlands as Glenn had a tour through the Netherlands and Belgium for Musik Meyer Benelux. The goal was to show his new signature model the GVL Cardinal euphonium made by Geneva musical instruments and this by masterclasses all over the BeNe(Lux)

As you can see on Glenn’s social media he is starting to conduct more and more. Besides still having lessons from his mentor David King, Glenn is always looking to improve so he attended the Allan Withington Conducting Summer School in Leeuwarden. Here Glenn, alongside 9 other conductors from all over Europe has been working with Soli Brass.

Off to Switzerland than for a week at the great Samedan Brass Week. A record of 14 euphonium students from Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, Belgium and the USA attended a weeks worth of classes with Thomas Ruedi, David Childs and Glenn himself. It’s worth mentioning that the winner and the runner up of the Lieksa Brass competition have been following lessons on the repertoire with these three excellent tutors.

For the second half of July Glenn than travelled to Thailand where he was a guest at the Brass Festival 2018 in the Kasetsart University. Here Glenn has given two masterclasses as well as a chamber music clinic and performed with ‘The Green Brass Band’

Another three summer schools to go before the finale break with family. From Thailand straight to France to give two masterclasses and a short recital at the ‘Académie de cuivres et percussion de Larmor Plage’ in the Brittany region of France.

Than off to another summer school with his students in the Swiss Alps for the fanfare band ‘Ancienne Cécilia de Chermignon’ and straight on to another week in Trakai.

Than….holiday!

Busy Summer

As for all musicians, Glenn will also have a very busy summer.
The summer season will commence in less than one week and will see Glenn traveling over the pond once again this year to be a guest at the International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. He’ll be joined by great artists like David Thornton, James Gourlay, Aaron Tindall and many others. The event will take place in Atlanta, Georgia.

After this trip, Glenn will fly to Australia and be featured in concerts in Sydney and Melbourne. The tour will be three weeks and will see Glenn giving Masterclasses,  conduct Rehearsals and do some Private teaching.

Glenn will continue his busy summer with a summer camp in the Swiss Alps, where he’ll be working with young musicians as well as a youth band.

To finish of before the real holiday Glenn will than fly out to Wales to appear as the guest soloist for the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, this year conducted by friend Tom Davoren. Glenn will premiere a new piece by the hand of Tom as well as Peter Meechans Requiem Paraphrases.

A very intensive but enjoyable 6 weeks a head. Follow Glenn on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter for quick updates about his travels!

Conducting success

Recently Glenn took up the baton to conduct Filton Concert Brass

GVL conducting Filton

The band participated at the Welsh Open and called in the help from Glenn as their conductor. The contest exists of an entertaining program and the band played a program they could handle very well.
They opened the contest with the bands conductor Tom Davorens arrangement of ‘Over the rainbow’. Than Glenn took the band straight into Peter Grahams ‘Phoenix’ from his ‘War of the Worlds’ suite.
After that there was time for a solo element, so the band decided to put their flugel player Tim Malpas on show in ‘South Loop’, again by the hand of Tom Davoren.
On a contest like this you’ll have to showcase the bands sound and slow playing aswel, this could be found in Stan Nieuwenhuis’ arrangement of ‘Bli Hos Oss’. To than finish off the program with ‘Fusion’ by Martin Cordner.

Glenn and the band took the first place and got some compliments from Ian Brownbill.

“The top two really produced dynamic, consistent music making and the rest of the top six were not far behind. I was also impressed by the standard of solo playing and conducting on show. The winning flugel soloist was excellent (Tim Malpas of Filton Concert) and the winners sounded so well rehearsed, balanced and musical. It may have been a nasty old day outside, but in the hall the audience enjoyed a fine day of music making” (Ian Brownbill to 4barsrest).

Meanwhile Glenn has been asked to do some other projects as the bands guest conductors. More info will follow soon!
